Fitzroy Legal Service Board

Chanphyna is currently a lawyer with the Aboriginal Legal Service of Victoria under the Balit Ngulu programme. Balit Ngulu is a specialist legal service for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children. She has experience in a variety of jurisdictions, including adult and juvenile delinquency, child protection and domestic violence. Fitzroy Legal Service is a community-based organization independent of government dedicated to supporting marginalized and vulnerable members of the community by providing legal information, advice and representation, as well as advocating for legislative reform and litigation in the public interest. Our services are offered in the cities of Darebin and Yarra as well as in the north interior of Melbourne. Jeremy is an experienced strategy and policy leader whose purpose and career have been focused on creating a positive difference for vulnerable and disadvantaged people. With 15 years of experience in the government, private and non-profit sectors, Jeremy has led key social and legislative reforms, organizational strategies, business design and improvement projects, corporate governance and reporting functions, and reviews for government and community service organizations. Depending on the role – for legal positions, previous experience in a CTC or similar organization. MIck Sheehy was appointed to the Board of Directors on June 18, 2020. He joined PwC as a partner in October 2018 to create and lead PwC`s Australian NewLaw practice, which focuses on providing strategic advice, technology and outsourcing solutions to legal departments. Mick is a recognized international leader in legal innovation and transformation, having won numerous international legal innovation awards and was the subject of a case study for Harvard Law School with his work. Claire is an experienced leader committed to inclusion and social justice.

Claire has worked in public policy, strategy and community service delivery with organisations such as Save the Children Australia, the Prime Minister`s and Cabinet Department and strategic communications firm SenateSHJ. When the Fitzroy Legal Service opened on 18 December 1972, it became Australia`s first legal centre for non-Aboriginal people. In the basement of Fitzroy City Hall, in one of Melbourne`s poorest suburbs at the time, this new legal department set itself the goal of doing the unthinkable: free legal advice for all arrivals. Mick founded and led the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium Australia, an industry body formed to share legal best practices and innovation knowledge. Mick is a member of the External Law Advisory Board at Swinburne University of Technology, has extensive experience in business and mergers and acquisitions and spent 14 years at Telstra before joining PwC, where he was General Counsel. Read the Legal Handbook to learn more about your legal rights. During his tenure as Managing Partner, Tony led the transformation of Hall & Wilcox into a leading national law firm. Prior to and during his tenure as Managing Partner, Tony represented clients in a number of major mergers and acquisitions, capital markets and corporate transactions. Tony plays a leadership role in the company`s pro bono and community program and is passionate about community and social justice. He is Chair of the Australian Business Community Network (ABCN) and a board member of the Melbourne Committee.

Tony lives in Northcote with his wife Amy and three children. Applications are usually possible in July of each year. Karri is a proud Nyiyaparli woman whose family originated in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia and grew up in the Wurrundjeri country. She was appointed to the Board of Directors on June 18, 2020. Karri is Senior Counsel at the Victoria First Peoples Assembly and is working on the country`s first contracting process. Prior to joining the meeting, Karri worked as a corporate lawyer for Arnold Bloch Leibler. Karri is a member of the Advisory Board of the Indigenous Law and Justice Hub at the University of Melbourne Faculty of Law. Chanphyna holds a Master of Laws (Juris Doctor) and a Bachelor of Criminal Justice (Social Sciences). Previously, she was a member of the FLS Board of Directors. Volunteers work for us in one or more of the following ways: Jennifer was appointed to the Board of Directors on October 2, 2019 and joins Fitzroy Legal with over 15 years of experience in strategy, innovation and communications. Jennifer has dedicated most of her career to social justice and has worked extensively in state and federal government agencies and NFP organizations that address issues such as Indigenous affairs, at-risk youth, justice reform, and domestic violence.
