For more information about legal services or to talk to someone who can help, call NY Connects at 716-753-4582, 716-661-7582, 716-363-4582 or email LawNY® is a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal aid to low-income people in 14 New York City boroughs. LawNY offices may be able to assist you with issues such as homelessness, evictions, foreclosure prevention, access to food stamps, social layoffs, domestic violence prevention, unemployment insurance benefits, access to veterans` benefits, reintegration of former offenders, divorce, SSI denials, or other legal matters if you qualify for our services. The Jamestown Office of Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. (LawNY) ® assists qualified clients in Chautauqua County. Office for the Aging provides limited legal assistance under contract with Legal Assistance of WNY (formerly Southern Tier Legal Services). Our contract primarily covers owner/tenancy issues and foreclosures, but can also put you in touch with pro bono attorneys and other legal resources. While we don`t have a contract with WNY`s legal services for seniors, we connect people to that service, as well as the Attorney General`s Office and the National Consumer Protection Bureau, especially for cases of financial abuse or fraud. The Access to Justice Project is a partnership between LawNY® and AmeriCorps, the preeminent U.S. volunteer service program that aims to address the legal needs of the poor by expanding the level of legal aid available and helping low-income clients access the legal system for economic benefits, adequate housing, health care and other basic basic needs. In addition, members strive to recruit and support community volunteers and improve collaboration with local staffing agencies. AmeriCorps members provide intake and testing services to income individuals seeking legal help with civil law issues and serving underserved populations.

They are offered the opportunity to gain direct and in-depth legal experience, excellent education and the chance to make a difference for vulnerable and low-income populations and their communities. If the person has been “locked out” of their home, is homeless, has received court records as part of an eviction or foreclosure proceeding, has no money, food or essential medicines, has been threatened with the closure of public services or has been laid off. Members must have at least two years of college experience or equivalent. Previous experience working with low-income individuals is preferred. WESTERN NEW YORK INC. Exceptions may be made up to 200% of the federal poverty line in certain circumstances. Members receive a bi-weekly living allowance of $715.42 for the duration of the contract.

You may also be eligible for assistance with basic health insurance, an education premium of up to $6,095, child care expenses and student loan deferrals. The successful candidate will work full-time in our Jamestown, NY office for twelve months. The period of use may begin as early as November 1, 2019 and, depending on the start date, may run no later than January 31, 2021. An extension of duration may be available after this period.
