As I learned to “call versus call” and qualify these acts, I began to understand how some racial justice organizations, especially those made up of middle-class whites, have a history of suppressing language. During the development of community agreements, a new concept was explained to me: “Calling-in versus Calling-out”. The appeal describes the act of publicly naming cases of oppressive language and behavior. What makes the call toxic is the nature and performance of the action. Calling someone “out” is usually a public performance in which a person selflessly demonstrates their superior knowledge and shames a person for their oppressive behavior. Despite the fact that a person may use the call with the intention of advocating for social change or justice, the call is itself a form of oppressive behavior. Calling is a proposed alternative to call culture, which involves a private, face-to-face conversation with a person who has used oppressive language or behavior to address the behavior without making a spectacle out of it. Calling-in recognizes that people are multifaceted and that a case of oppressive behavior does not define the totality of who we are.
