Bail – A method of ensuring that the accused appears in court in a criminal case for future proceedings when released from prison after arrest. The defendant or a person acting on his behalf pays money to the court or agrees to pay a certain amount (postal guarantee). The money is forfeited if the defendant does not appear in court as required by the court. A bail hearing looks at the likelihood that the defendant will appear in court in the future.
