Smoking is practiced so freely in Indonesia that you can do it almost anywhere. Cigarettes are barely taxed. Cigarette advertising is unrestricted. Even when legislation started printing nasty images on packaging last year, there were few signs that this was actually happening. Technically, it`s legal for residents and visitors to smoke only cannabis in an Amsterdam café, although it may be an exaggeration to imagine someone`s joint being searched for evidence of contraband tobacco. Nevertheless, some cafes and other places offer a separate smoking room, which, according to the law, must be separate, closed and unstaffed. The above information is based on a survey that circulated in 43 countries in 2021. The data used refer to legislation adopted on 1 June 2022, i.e. Legislation or improvements made to implementation after that date are not included. Some guidelines have been formally adopted by June 1, 2022, but will not come into effect until the final months of the year.
For example, the ban on smoking outside hospitals in Scotland will come into force on 5 September 2022. Only one exception has been provided for in Denmark`s otherwise comprehensive smoking ban: bars can do so if they or a designated room are less than 40 square metres in size (that`s about one-seventh of a tennis court, for reference). Few bars are eligible, so residents of the Danish capital tend to smoke outside, which is generally perceived as a paragon of urban virtue. Some countries have focused on certain types of smoking bans, such as smoking in private cars in the presence of minors (such as the United Kingdom, Lithuania and Belgium). Recent progress has included banning smoking on the terraces of bars and restaurants, for example in Sweden. Other countries have recently improved the enforcement of smoking bans (e.g. Greece). While there are differences between countries, we note a recent trend in countries extending smoke-free policies to new products on the market, such as heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes: 37 European countries have included some form of vaping ban, while 23 have included an e-cigarette ban in their smoke-free policies. Thanks to a terrible law full of loopholes, small bars and cafes are exempt from the Austrian smoking ban – just like large ones, as long as they set up a smoking area that no one is watching very closely. As a result, Vienna and the rest of Austria are virtually the last recalcitrant to smoking in Western Europe. However, plans for a new law are underway, so this situation will not last long. All 16 states have implemented different tobacco control policies. However, most states still allow the use and supply of smoking rooms in the hospitality industry.
